Default TF wheel bearings

Hi

Having just had the brakes done on my TF while the work was being done, the mechanic pointed out the wheel bearings had become loose, these have now been sorted and the car feel's sharp again. I've heard of the head gaskett problem but the mechanic said this was a common problem for TF's that were driven on tracks how true is this? Has anybody else had issues?

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris

Wheel bearings are funny on the F/TF. I know of a number of people who have needed to replace them whilst others such as myself are still going strong on the originals after 10 years and many track days.

I personally believe that there might be a suspicion of some bearing quality issues with some TFs around 02-04.

Yes, it does seem to be quite a problem with cars that are used on track. Normally its the nearside rear one that goes. Also worth checking the flange at the same time as we've seen a few of these that have failed.

With mine being a 53 plate car it would come under the iffy bearings as it were plus mine was indeed the near side rear that had gone. What symptoms should I be aware of for the future?

I think pretty much what you have experienced; a certain vagueness to the handling with a tendency for the front or back to feel loose.

You can check them quite easily by jacking the wheel off the ground and feeling for any play when rocking the wheel with your hands in the 3/9 O'clock position. With your hands in the 12:00/6:00 position you might feel play in the top and bottom ball joints as well as the bearing.
